South of the river is home to some incredibly inspiring celebrities, and we’ve rounded up the familiar faces who have lived in South East London – at least for a while in their lives.

After researching a variety of publications, autobiographies and fan accounts on Wikipedia, we found a surprisingly long list of celebrities from south east London.

From film stars to comedians, fashion designers and more, many of the most talented celebrities have lived in South East London – it’s exhilarating.

Think about it, you could have lived on the same street as David Bowie.

In no particular order, our favorite stars who have – at some point – resided in the News Shopper patch are listed below:

Charlie Chaplin

Walworth, Southwark

Charlie Chaplin is considered one of the greatest comic artists on the screen and one of the most iconic figures in the history of cinema.

Chaplin was born in 1889 in Walworth, South London and is said to have lived comfortably for the first years of his life.

His parents were born theater artists – hence the undeniable talent – who unfortunately separated after the comedians were born.

Michael Cain

Rotherhithe, Southwark

On March 14, 1933, Sir Michael Cane was born at St Olave’s Hospital, Rotherhithe, South London to parents Ellen Frances Marie and Maurice Joseph Micklewhite.

Caine, who often plays cockney, made his breakthrough in the 1960s with leading roles in British films, such as Zulu.

The movie star has since appeared in Batman Begins, Miss Congeniality, The Italian Job and Interstellar.

Gemma Arterton

Gravesend

Former Bond girl Gemma Arterton was born in Gravesend and North Kent Hospital and attended Gravesend Grammar School for Girls.

Her breakthrough role was in St Trinian’s in 2007, and she has gone on to star in everything from Hollywood blockbusters such as The Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans, to low-budget British comedies – Tamara Drew and Song for Marion.

Jude’s Law

Lewisham and Blackheath

One of Britain’s biggest film stars today, Lewisham-born Law has starred in films ranging from The Talented Mr Ripley and Closer to Sherlock Holmes and Road to Perdition.

He has also worked with directors such as Kenneth Brannagh, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese.

david bowie

Brixton, Bromley, Beckenham (+ more)

The iconic David Bowie – also known as Ziggy Stardust – was born in Brixton and raised in south-east London.

Places include attending Stockwell Infants’ School in 1951, studying at the Croydon School of Art for a brief period, living in a ground floor flat in Haddon Hall, Beckenham, and working on the legendary album – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, in Greenwich.

Bowie is considered one of the greatest music legends of all time and had exceptional songwriting skills.

A true icon who spent a long period of her life in South East London.
