Pastrys Shoes Impact on 2000s hip-hop fashion

Colorful high top sneakers. Eye-catching stacked heels. Comfortable leggings and trendy accessories. Created by Vanessa and Angela Simmons, pastries carved out a prominent place in 2000s hip-hop fashion.

The “brand born into hip-hop royalty,” as described by pastries websitewas founded in 2007. If you watched “Run’s House” on MTV, you must remember the beginnings of the brand.

Running for six seasons, the show followed the Simmons’ family and chronicled various projects and adventures. Angela and Vanessa quickly made teen entrepreneurship a trend with their first “Cake Collection” and shared their love of fashion, desserts and shoes with the world. The brand first started as a sneaker line and later expanded into heels, apparel and accessories.

At a 2020 interview With REVOLT TV, the sisters discussed creating the brand and what it meant for the fashion industry, “It was fashion and we started that,” Angela said. “There were no real sneakers like that back then and we had our own way.”

With the show as the catalyst – and the colorful, playful designs all the rage – the line quickly grew and spread across the internet. This was especially true among blogs – the place to find gossip and celebrity news in the early 2000s.

After the launch of the brand, the publications displayed pastries whimsical launch parties and trade show pop-ups and sightings of celebrities and fashionistas wearing or supporting the brand. Artists Keri Hilson and Trina are known for rocking pastries.

Angela and Vanessa were also seen rubbing shoulders with popular models of the time like Tyson Beckford, hosting red carpets and TV shows wearing the brand, and attending New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and sitting at the front row of the runways of fashionable designers, such as Betsey Johnson. Even Jay Z noticed the line. He mentioned the brand and the creators in his lyrics to his 2009 hit, “Empire State of Mind,” featuring Alicia Keys.

“I was a cop in Harlem–hola, my Dominicans (Dimelo!). Up on Broadway, it took me back to that McDonald’s. I took it to my hideout, 560 State Street. Catch me in the kitchen, like Simmons whipping pastry.

The same year, the sisters expanded their original sneaker line to “Pastry VIP” offering heels and a dressier style. the “fresh, fun and feminine linewas available in a capsule collection with Macy’s. “The pieces are so quirky and so outside the box of what everyone else does,” Vanessa Told PEOPLE on the collection at the time. The shoes were perfect with jeans or a short skirt.

While the brand experienced initial distribution issues, pastries became an international hit. Vanessa Simmons is the creative director of the brand and Pastrys has found a new market in the dance and youth sectors. The pastry brand instagram features some of the world’s best dance teams in their footwear and apparel and highlights partnerships with organizations like Steven Tyler’s Janie’s Fund support abused girls.

The popularity of the line – and the fact that the brand continues to grow while remaining true to its foundation – is an important part of the history of hip hop fashion and the influential role of women and girls. While hip hop had been recognized as a genre of American music since the 1970s and gained popularity in the 80s and 90s, it wasn’t until the 2000s that it became mainstream. What followed was the impact of hip hop on greater American culture and, in turn, style and fashion.

The market exploded with lines created and inspired by the genre and its peerless artists. Streetwear has flooded department stores.

Hip-hop fashion has become such a trend that Sean Puffy Combs had been named CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year in 2004. Awarded for its popular line, Sean JohnPuffy beat household names like Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors to win one of the country’s biggest fashion awards that year.

What this movement lacked, however, was the voice, presence and recognized contributions of black women. Angela and Vanessa, along with other designers like Kimora Lee Simmons from Phat Baby and Beyonce and her mother, Tina Lawson, of House of Dereonstepped in to fill that void.

“Even when we started baking… Obviously sneakers were the main thing, but we’re still supposed to be an ambitious brand,” Vanessa told REVOLT TV in 2020. “We want to empower the next generation of people to come. “

Several articles deal with hip-hop fashion and the impact of streetwear on American style and trend. Creative women are often omitted or mentioned after the fact. This must change.

We cannot speak of the success of ivy park, skimmedor Lizzo’s recently launched litty without mentioning pastries. The brand – and its designers Angela and Vanessa Simmons – are now due to receive their roses. Not only for their lasting contributions to the world of hip-hop fashion, but also for paving the way for other creative women.
