Marshmello, David Guetta: Who is the most popular DJ right now? | Show biz
PARIS, October 27 – While the pandemic may have put the decks on hiatus for many DJs, stage stars like David Guetta, Marshmello and Skrillex continue to enjoy great popularity. The Viberate platform has established a ranking of the most popular DJs this year.
The ranking was published after the professional magazine DJ Mag announced the winners of its annual Top 100 DJ survey. French DJ David Guetta tops the list for the second time in his career, ahead of Dutch DJs Martin Garrix and Armin van Buuren.
Viberate’s data-based results, however, tell a slightly different story. Here, the American DJ Marshmello in the lead classification with two billion views on YouTube and 51.9 million followers on Spotify. He is followed by French star David Guetta and Anglo-Norwegian DJ Alan Walker. The videos of the 53-year-old DJ, composer and producer recorded 1.2 billion views on YouTube, compared to 1.4 billion for his young counterpart. But the French DJ far exceeds Alan Walker on Shazams, his tracks being tagged on the app some 36.4 million times.
Viberate’s Top 10 also includes Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix, Tiësto, Skrillex, DJ Snake and Alok. Although they reign supreme in the DJ Mag poll, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Armin van Buuren and Afrojack are not on the Viberate list.
The power of collaborations and memes
As the pandemic hit the electronic music world hard, some DJs have managed to play their cards right. One of these artists is Kazakh Imanbek, who ranks 49th in Viberate’s ranking. In March, the DJ won the Grammy Award for Best Remix for his redesign of Roses by American rapper Saint Jhn. It was in a way a sign of recognition for this self-taught musician from the small town of Aksu, in the Pavlodar region in northern Kazakhstan.
Collaborations can also have a real impact on a DJ’s popularity. German producer and DJ Topic and Swedish artist A7S have won over 800 places in Viberate’s Top 100 with their hits Break me down and, more recently, Your love.
Memes and internet culture can also boost some careers. British DJ Riton has teamed up with Mufasa and Hypeman for his latest single, Friday. While the track is based on the melody of a remix of Nightcrawlers’ Push the feeling on, its popularity is largely linked to the presence of the influencer duo. The pair got noticed on TikTok in April 2020, thanks to their crazy dance moves to Push the feeling on filmed from a moving car – a challenge emulated by celebrities like Katy Perry, Gordon Ramsey and even Kanye West. – ETX Studio
