The British beauty recalled being humiliated during a fitting for Milan Fashion Week when she was just 19, resulting in her being banned from every runway that season for having gained weight.

The incident triggered Karen’s messy feeding cycle until she finally realized she had to ignore the criticism.

She recalls: “There was a fashion editor on set, a dress didn’t fit me, and her instinct was to say, ‘Oh, you’ve eaten too much.’

“Everyone on the set laughed at me and said, ‘Oh fat gonna come out.’

“They were all laughing, and being young and impressionable and wanting to please, I internalized that. When I’m thin, I succeed. But when I weigh 10 or 15 pounds more than they want, that means I’m not worthy.

“To be successful, I had to play this game, these are the unspoken rules of the trade.”
