Freeze the Fear: Fans in tears as emotional finale sees celebrities jump off 500ft bridge
Freeze the Fear fans were left in tears after an action-packed finale that saw celebrities jump off a massive 500ft bridge. EExtreme athlete Wim Hof put celebrities through their paces and taught them the benefits of controlled breathing in a series that saw Gabby Logan, Owain Wyn Evans and Patrice Evra pushed to their limits.
But Tuesday’s emotional finale saw the celebrities take on arguably their most daunting challenge yet by jumping off a 500ft bridge. Relief and triumph were clear on the faces of Tamzin Outhwaite and Dianne Buswell after taking on the challenge – and it even left some fans in tears. By screaming “I f*cking did it” after her jump, Dianne’s reaction particularly won over the fans of the show who were delighted.
It wasn’t just the celebrities who got the applause – after a grueling six weeks of (literally) chilling challenges, there was a lot of love online for host Wim Hof, who put the celebrities through their paces.
Six weeks of cold showers, intense breathing techniques and freezing challenges had accumulated until the finale of Freeze the Fear. At the start of the episode, presenter Holly Willoughby described how “it all led up to this,” in epic fashion.
And “epic” was definitely the word to describe this finale. As morning broke the group took one last cold shower and Welsh weathercaster Owain Wyn Evans said: “I haven’t been a big fan of the feeling of the cold shower but I think it gave me helped,” before splashing cold water on Strictly Come Dancing’s Dianne Buswell.
But would the group decide to jump or not? As they made their way to the bridge, EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite said: ‘I’m at peace with my decision, I’m not jumping. I have nothing to give up and if I did, I would go to therapy”, but what would the others do?
Facing the sight of the colossal bridge, Owain looked startled as he prepared to take a leap, which 500 feet would cause him to topple under the body of the bridge. Dianne was the first to take on the challenge and from the ground below, Owain claimed, “she’s terrified of this.” Meanwhile, as always, Iceman Wim Hof was on hand to tell the Strictly star there was “a step between her and the future”.
A tearful Dianne said, “I can’t imagine myself jumping”, but that she had accepted the fact that she was facing her fears and that she would be able to live with the fact that she couldn’t jump.
Despite this, Wim encouraged her to “let go of the past” and she faced her fear. As she fell, she cried, “I made it! I fucking did it!” and the other celebs watched proudly. Dianne then returned to the floor and told the others that “Wim made her feel at peace with herself” and that she didn’t was “never felt happier”.
Tamzin, having seen Dianne jump, then changed her mind and attempted the huge leap. She greeted Wim at the top and told him she “can’t believe she’s even thinking about it”. And with that – she fell, having also faced her fears. “I’m so glad I did it, it really moved me,” Tamzin said as she returned to the others and even went so far as to call it one of the best things she’s ever done.
Steven was next – he emotionally decided not to jump, feeling it was out of “his comfort zone”. The other celebrities praised him for his decision, saying he showed great strength not to. Then it was Chelsee’s turn, who faced her fear and jumped off the bridge. She was praised for her strength.
And then the one we’ve all been waiting for – Owain. Welsh presenter Owain has come a long way since he started the series, so naturally the group wondered if he would face the jump. An emotional Owain used his breathing techniques and simply said “let’s go” as he jumped off the bridge. His trademark banana blew in the wind and Owain bravely returned to the other celebrities.
Patrice was next, who without hesitation jumped off the bridge. Gabby then tried and chose to fall off the bridge as well. Finally it was Alfie’s departure and until he got to the bridge he wasn’t sure if he would jump. The singer had previously opened up about his battles with depression and how Wim’s training had a huge impact on him. There was a lot of riding on the jump as Alfie felt it would be a fresh start for him. “Exhale the past, breathe the future,” Wim said as Alfie prepared to face the fall. He described how he got “frightened” and looked at the drop.
5…4…3…2…1 and he had done it. Swinging below deck, an emotional Alfie cheered.
“Human emotions are the best,” Wim described and he’s safe to say celebrities would definitely agree. The past six weeks have tested them, both emotionally and physically, and all have reaped the benefits of cold water immersion.
