Like most people, I have an extreme visceral reaction (hate) to padded vests. Especially if they’re from Patagonia, worn with a blue button down, and spotted on a banker walking down Wall Street. I can do nothing. It’s something so deeply ingrained in me that I feel myself cringe at the sight of one of them before I can even process my emotion. Whenever my sister’s boyfriend wears one, she gets me ready before I see him. “He’s wearing the vest, just to let you know.” Ugh.
The Internet, as in most cases, is part of the problem. This prompted me to immediately see this accessory as “the Midtown Uniform”, a look beloved by financial brethren the world over. And it’s hard not make fun of the look when you realize it. There is even an Instagram dedicated to this phenomenon, and more internet think tanks devoted to the subject than I can count. But celebrities like Jennifer Garner and models like Hailey Bieber make the Midtown uniform their own. They’re making quilted jackets cool again, like only someone as beautiful and famous as them could.
Naturally, Bieber’s puffer jacket was a $ 3,100 Bottega Veneta that matched his $ 1,900 Bottega mini croissants bag. Garner, on the other hand, keeps it a bit more realistic for our budgets and often opts for a $ 130 Xirena puffer jacket that has since sold out, worn with his favorite TikTok trend, leggings. Kim Kardashian wore an oversized Balenciaga quilted gilet that was longer than most of our coats last year. Style pioneer Dua Lipa has also been working hard on the puffer vest revival since September 2020.
Honestly, I’m starting to think this celebrity acceptance of the once-hated trend is a good thing, as quilted vests really are a winter essential that will look perfect as the seasons transition. What do you wear when you are not too hot or not too cold? A quilted waistcoat really is the perfect solution. And if it’s extremely cold, they work great under or over a jacket as an extra layer.
Plus, I’d be lying if I said that adorable Sandy Liang floral-embroidered cardigan wasn’t on my wishlist for years. Area also makes one for $ 2,200 with an embellished crystal fringe that quickly sold out at Nordstrom, and although it’s extremely out of my price range, I often dream of it. As for what I’m realistically going to buy, Nordstrom has so many great options on the market, like Sam Edelman’s for $ 100. Guess if all of Hollywood can wear the Midtown uniform, I can at least try it on.
